Effective leadership styles; a Practical course for PhD supervisors (with actor)

Dates: 30 November and 14 December, individual sessions 7 or 9 December 2010

Deadline for registration is 28-10-2010

Introduction

This workshop is offered by Wageningen Graduate Schools (WGS) and is organized by Dr. E. Cocheret de la Morinière and co-workers (ElroyCOM consultancy, www.ElroyCOM.nl).
The chief trainer Dr. E. Cocheret de la Morinière and his co-workers provide this instructive, intense and fun course: Effective Leadership styles. Sharing knowledge and experience among participants is key in this course. Basic leadership theories are discussed and tested. Participants will practice various situations that demand specific leadership skills with a professional training actor. A personal coaching session will help participants to formulate a personal development plan according to their wishes and needs. These individual sessions are scheduled between the first and the second training day.
The aim of the course is to enhance the success rate of PhD-projects by focusing on the role of the supervisor. During the course we discuss and share views, problems and solutions. We provide participants with practical tools for effective leadership and supervision of PhD-students. Effective supervision demands flexibility on the part of the supervisor to adapt his or her leadership style to the 'task maturity' and needs of the PhD student. Generally, the logical change in leadership style throughout the PhD project will be from a directive style (teacher/instructor) at the start of the PhD project to a coaching, supporting or even delegating style at the end of it. With the aid of an actor we therefore apply different leadership styles to various cases involving motivation, feedback, conflicts, negotiations, and other subjects tailored to your personal situation. Practising leadership styles and conversation skills helps to sensitize the supervisor to adapt to the requirements of the situation at hand, and make his or her job easier and more effective.

Before the start of the course we make an inventory of your personal wishes by means of intake forms. The individual coaching session between the first and second course day with one of the chief trainers helps you to set personal learning goals. The end result for each participant will be a clear set of tools as well as a personal development plan in relation to leadership in general and supervision of PhD-students in particular.

The chief trainer for this course (Dr. E. Cocheret) has a doctorate degree and has extensive experience in the supervision of students as well as in coaching supervisors. All the ElroyCOM co-trainers, coaches and actors have an academic background.

Programme

Before the start of the workshop, you are invited to fill in an intake form, allowing us to adapt the course to your wishes. The course itself consists of training day 1, then a 1-hour individual coaching session, followed by training day 2.
Intake forms
Your personal wishes and context will be taken into account by means of intake forms (filled in before the start of course). We invite you to inform us about your personal goals, questions, and requests, and to describe a situation that you would like to simulate with the actor. This enables us to fine-tune the contents of the course and the cases with the actor to your individual needs.

Day 1:
The first day starts of with sharing knowledge and experience among participants. The chief trainer presents his view on the supervision of PhD students based on scientific studies on success and failure factors of PhD projects.
We clarify the formal conditions and agreements within the context of your PhD students, by using a checklist. We share best practices with regard to project planning, how to supervise a PhD-student and his/her planning scheme. We then discuss leadership theories and evaluate their potential practical implications. Specific tests such as a leadership test and an interpersonal communication test will give you some insight into your natural qualities.
In the afternoon, participants will practice basic conversation techniques with a professional actor (who plays various types of PhD-students), involving feedback, planning and resistance. At the end of day 1 the participants receive an assignment.

Individual Coaching Session
The personal evaluation conversation or coaching session (in between the first and last course day) with one of the chief trainers helps you to establish personal goals with regard to supervision. Based on your wishes we provide you with individual feedback referring to your personal qualities and learning goals. We help you to find books for further reading or courses to participate in. The end result for each participant will be a clear set of tools as well as a personal development plan applied to leadership in general and supervision of PhD-students in particular. All participants receive a full coaching report, including all of the test results, future wishes for development, a summary and conclusions of the individual coaching session, advice from the head trainers, and a personalised list of references for further reading.

Day 2:
The participants discuss the results of the assignment. We offer help and share advice on how to build a sufficient support network for the PhD student, in order to minimise dependency on the supervisor and stimulate self-reliance. We practice your leadership skills as a coaching and supporting supervisor. We discuss various conversation skill models and apply them to your context. Questioning techniques, negotiation and conflict management models will help you to improve your personal effectiveness as a leader.
In the afternoon, participants will simulate difficult situations with various types of PhD-students (played by a professional actor), involving problem analysis, the supervisor as a coach, negotiation and conflict management.
