The development of microbial pest control products for control of arthropods: a critical evaluation and a roadmap to success
Microbial crop protection products and the companies that develop and commercialize them have not been very successful up to today. In this thesis a rational and structured model has been designed for the successful development and commercialization of microbial pesticides based on insect-pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and nematodes of mites and insects.
The various phases and the building blocks of the developmental process have been identified, and recommendations are provided for conducting the necessary research and for taking the right decisions. The model is based on applied science and emphasizes on an commercial approach.
Crop protection with chemical pesticides is under great pressure in our society, and biological products are excellent alternatives. With the use of the designed roadmap, developers of microbial pesticides increase the chance of accomplishing successful development and marketing of their products. The biopesticide industry is now challenged, in collaboration with applied scientists from academia and research institutes, to develop reliable and competitive biopesticides which are required desired for a sustainable agriculture. The future perspective for biopesticides is promising.
